Ethiopian Traditional Basketry:Harari Type.Harari baskets are famous for the striking richness of their colors. There are numerous types of baskets, most of which have a decorative function and are used as wall hangings or for the ceremonial exchange of food gifts among families. A few baskets are of simple make and have hardly any decoration at all; these are the ones for plain household use, like winnowing trays and measuring cups.There are small baskets with lids that are used to keep aromatic wood for incense, or to keep mastic.Most patterns have variations that can be woven in several different color combinations. One variation is the masob, which appears on several baskets. This is used on baskets for mothers in law, very often on larger plates, on baskets for hairnets, and on some other smaller ones.The term masob is originally an Amharic word referring to the high footed dining table of basketwork.
